New business spotlight: misty tree coffee Company

Hood River has a new coffee roaster in town: Misty Tree Coffee Company. Opened in late 2021, the roastery focuses on providing organic, Fair Trade Certified coffee that is low in acidity.

The small-batch roastery does not have a storefront, but beans are available online for shipping at mistytreecoffeecompany.com. Owners Jill Stephens and her husband Scott are working to get their product in local stores.

On the website, customers will not only find bags of coffee, they will also find sample sizes of coffee so they can give each product a try before committing to a whole bag.

The option for samples comes from Jill and Scott's mission to limit waste. Jill explains the 4 oz bags are designed so that clients can get enough to try a coffee without committing to a full bag they may not like. She wishes more businesses would do this.

Before co-owning her coffee company, Jill was a massage therapist and wellness coach in New York state. She spent months researching the best coffee roasting methods and put a lot of thought and care into how her beans are sourced.

In fact, one of her current blends, Café Femenino, is a single-origin coffee from a woman-owned farm in Guatemala. The farm is part of the  Café Femenino program, which empowers women in remote and rural coffee communities and gives them more control over their futures. The group explains on their Facebook page, "To be a Café Femenino coffee producer, the coffee must be produced separately from the men’s production. A portion of the coffee farm must be designated for the women, her name must be added to the title of the land (a first!) and she must be the one who receives the premium."
