Hungry? There's help. If you have lost your job or are below a certain income, you can apply for food stamps. If approved, you get a debit card that you can use at grocery stores like Safeway, Rosauers, Harvest Market and farmer's markets. We also have a lot of wonderful local food resources. Fish Food Bank is operating on reduced hours. The staff is always very friendly. Right now, you can pull up in your car, let a volunteer know you are new and then wait as the volunteer "shops" for you inside the food bank and then puts the groceries in your car. Allow some time for pickup but know that it is very discreet, you will get a good amount of food, and that many people are in the same boat as you. It's OK to accept resources. If you need food, please go. You can always donate later in your life when you're in a better place but if it will bring you some peace of mind to have some groceries in your cupboards, please go!
Pickup is Monday and Friday: 3:30 to 5 pm and Wednesday 3:30 to 5:30 pm. There are also pickups in Cascade Locks and Parkdale. If you can donate: The food bank is most in need of canned hominy, canned corn, chicken noodle soup, and ramen. If you have those items to spare, drop them by FISH 8am and noon, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in Hood River, 1130 TUCKER ROAD OR donate online using PayPal.
